What is ear wax?
Ear wax is a sticky substance produced naturally to help clean, lubricate and protect your ears. The wax will normally work its way out of the ear and eventually new fresh wax will take its place.
In some cases the ear wax can build up in the ear canal bringing on the following symptoms :-
- Hearing loss
- A feeling of fullness
- Ringing in the ears
- Hearing aids become blocked or start to whistle
A build up of ear wax can be extremely frustrating and upsetting but its important not to use cotton buds or other methods of self cleaning.
If you do have any of the above symptoms or are concerned the best thing to do is seek medical advice. Your two main options are to get in touch with your local GP surgery or a hearing health centre.
You could go to see your GP or practice nurse for advice and ear wax removal. This service is free but it may take several weeks to get an appointment for the wax removal.
